John was born in 1699.1   John's father was Jonathan Butterfield and his mother was Ruth Wright.  His paternal grandparents were Jonathan Butterfield and Mary Dixon; his maternal grandparents were John Wright and Abigail Unknown. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Jonathan, William, Mary, Abigail, Ruth, Jane, Lydia, Deborah and Phebe.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.1
