Walter Burnell's father was Luther McKinley Banks and his mother was Ruth Bryan. His maternal grandparents were Gardner Bryan and Eliza Fountain. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Guy Lancelot, John Luther, Leslie Vernon, Eva Kathleen, Mary Ruth, Ethel Iris and Jessie Wilson.-
