1   Samuel's father was Alexander Balcom and his mother was Jane Holbrook.  His maternal grandparents were William Holbrook and Elizabeth Pitts. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named John, Alexander, Katherine Balcom, Deborah, Freegift, Hannah, Joseph, Lydia and Sarah.1
