  Will dated 30 Jan 1670/1. MATTHEW ALLYN, Cambridge 1632, from Brampton, co.Devon; freeman, MA 4 Mar 1635.  Rep. at March, General Court 1636; rem. prob.1636 Hartford where he was an original proprietor; house lot on road to the neck (Windsor Street); owned 110 acres in that and other lots.  He was excommunicated by the church in Hartford and 3 Jun 1644, he appealed to the General Court for redress; the records do not show how the affair was settled, but may be why he rem. to Windsor.  Nevertheless few men in the colony had more influence or rec. more honors from the people than Mr.Allyn.  He was Deputy from Windsor 1648-57; Assistant Conn. Colony 1658-1665; Frequently appointed upon important committees by the General Court.  In 1666, appointed Cheif Judge: Col. Matthew Allen of Windsor

  Commissioner to treat with New Haven Colony Oct 1662 & Mar.1663.  Commissioner for NY Boundary Oct 1663; Commission for MA & RI Boundary Oct 1664 and for United Colonies May 1664; War Committee for Windsor Oct 1654.  He paid 6 shillings for pew set in Windsor Meeting House 18 Jan 1659/60.  The Plymouth Lot in Windsor was owned by Matthew in 1640.   Matthew, of Hartford in 1654, claimed that his share of Windsor upland was 360 acres which was granted to him; 80 acres at Pipe-Stove Swamp and 280 acres towards the west bounds of town.  He probably built on the Hill (Plymouth) before he came to Windsor to live, and it is almost certain that when he had built there, he utilized the material of the Trading House in the construction of his new house.  For, in those days, there were no saw mills.  Its front presented two stories; the rear roof (lean-to) sloping down to cover at the
  eaves, but one story; front door centered; stairway had two great stairs where it turned at right angles, landing the passenger in the little hall above facing the window directly over front door.  Back of the stairway, and of the same width as the front door, was the huge chimney with 3 fireplaces on lower floor, and one each in the 2 rooms above.  The summer beam joists which supported the floor of the 2nd story, were plac(?) and without lath and plaster.  Sides of room were wainscotted about 3 ft up from floor, and
  plastered above.
    On 3 May 1638, Lt. Wm. Holmes, by power of attorney for New Plymouth Co., sold to Mr Matthew Allyn of Hartford, all the lands, houses, servants, goods, and chattels in Windsor.  Matthew & brother Samuel Allyn, active dealers in land.
    Wife Margaret was the sole executrix of his will.
  Hon. Matthew Allyn, as we have thus seen, was eminently "a man of affairs" and an active, public-spirited citizen. "Few men," says Hinman, had more influence, or rec. more honors from the people, than Mr. Allyn"  Energetic, willful, and persistent in all his projects, he was yet a just, high-minded man, and one of the props of the infant colony.  Though he fell under the ban of the Hartford church (probably because he entertained sentiment on baptism, church membership, or church discipline, at variance with the majority of his brethern) there are many evidences that he was still held in high esteem at Hartford; and Mr. Hinman seems to hint that the H. Church encouraged him to remove, being afraid of his influence with the settlers.  In 1658, when trouble again arose in the Hartford Church, Mr. Allyn was chairman of the Com. of the General Court to conduct a correspondence on the subject
       Mr. Allyn d. 1 Feb. 1670/1; will dated 30 Jan 1670/1 makes his wife, Margaret, his sole executrix; gave her the use of his estate, and desired his sons and son-in-law Newberry, to improve it for her; to his son John he gave his Kennilworth lands, and confirmed to him those lands in Hartford which he had already given him as a marriage portion.  His W. house he had previously deeded to his son Thomas, subject to his life use by himself and his wife; he gave him also a large estate, and provided liberally for his dau. Mary Newberry, and grand-daughter Mary Maudsley.
