  William Randolph II of Turkey Island, 1755

  This painting is rendered in a manner far removed from John Wollaston's usual style. Though the artist was able to give vivid enough color to the sitter's face, he poorly modulated the flesh tones. Wollaston was commissioned by the builder of Wilton to produce a portrait of his late father, William Randolph II (1681–1742), presumably from an image painted earlier.
  
  A successful career in the law is surely the activity alluded to by the inclusion in this canvas of what is probably a legal document that Randolph reads. It is an interesting addition because the portraits of most Virginia gentlemen depict idle hands, in contrast to images of northern merchants proud of their industrious activity as businessmen. The prop points as well to a social difference between two generations of Virginians—one earned wealth and the other inherited it.

  William Randolph 
  of "Turkey Island," Henrico, was a son of Col. William Randolph of the same place, and was born in Nov., 1681. His first public office seems to have been assistant to his father as clerk of the house of burgesses, a position to which he finally succeeded, holding it until 1712. In 1720, and probably other years, he was a member of the house of burgesses for Henrico county, and in 1727, he was appointed to the council. In 1737, he made a voyage to England for his health, but returned the following year from which time he was a constant attendant at the sessions of the council until his death which occurred Oct. 19, 1742. He married Elizabeth Beverley, daughter of Hon. Peter Beverley, of Gloucester county, Virginia, and had issue.

  1. William Randolph, Jr., known as Councillor Randolph, b. at Turkey Island, Nov. 1681. Married (1705) Elizabeth Beverly.
  II. William Randolph, known as Councillor Randolph of Turkey Island, Henrico Co., Va., eldest child of William Randolph, progenitor of the family in Virginia, and Mary, née Isham, was b. 1681; d. Oct. 19, 1741. He inherited Turkey Island and was buried there. On the slab which covers his grave there is a lengthy inscription, which can be found in the Page Family History. 
  Councillor William Randolph married (1705) Elizabeth Peyton Beverly, daughter of Peter Beverly and Eliza Peyton, his wife, of Gloucester Co., Va. Issue five children: 
  1. Beverly Randolph, b. at Turkey Island 1706, son of Councillor Randolph and Eliza, née Peyton. Married (1734) a Miss Lightfoot, and d. without issue. 
  2. Peter Randolph, b. at Turkey Island 1708, son of Councillor Randolph and Eliza, née Peyton, lived at Chatsworth. Married (1733) Lucy Bolling, daughter of Robert Bolling, and had four children, viz.: William, Beverly, Robert and Ann. Beverly was b. at Chatsworth 1734, and married Martha Cooke. He died at his residence "Green Creek," in Feb. 1797. He succeeded Edmond Randolph as Gov. of Virginia, Dec. 1, 1788, and served until Dec. 1, 1791. He was succeeded by Gen. "Light Horse" Harry Lee. 
  3. William Randolph, b. 1710, son of Councillor Randolph and Eliza, née Peyton, settled at "Milton," Henrico Co., Va. Married (1735) Anne, daughter of Benj. Harrison, of Berkley on James River, Virginia, and Anne, née Carter. Issue: 
  1. William Randolph, b. 1736. 
  2. Peyton Randolph, b. 1738. Married (1763) his cousin, Lucy Harrison. They had three children: Betty Randolph, Kidder Randolph and Peyton Randolph, who married Anne, daughter of James Innes, Atty. Gen. of Va. His only son, James Innes Randolph, married Susan, daughter of Capt. Addison Armistead, U. S. Army. 
  3. Anne Randolph, b. 1740. Married (1760) Benj. Harrison, of Brandon, on James River, Va. No issue. 
  4. Elizabeth Randolph, b. 1742. Married (1762) Philip Grymes, of Middlesex Co., Va. 
  5. Lucy Randolph, b. 1744. Married (1764) Lewis Burwell, of King's Mill, York Co., Va. 
  4. Daughter Randolph, daughter of Councillor Randolph and Eliza, née Peyton, b 1718. Married - Price. 
  5. Elizabeth Randolph, b. 1725. Married (1745) Col. John Chiswell and had four children: 1. Lucy Chiswell, married (Nov. 24, 1770) Col. William Nelson of "The Dorrile," Hanover Co., Va.; 2. Susan R. Chiswell, married Speaker John Robinson, of the Virginia House of Burgesses, and had issue; 3. Daughter Chiswell, married Warren Lewis, 4. Elizabeth Chiswell, married Charles Carter, of Ludlow. Col. John Chiswell and Elizabeth, née Randolph, had no sons, so the name of Chiswell as a surname in Virginia is extinet. It is believed it was originally written De Choiseul.

  William Randolph (1681-1741) of “Turkey Island” [RA.1]
  
  William Randolph, son of William Randolph and Mary Isham, was born November 1681. He married Elizabeth Peyton Beverley (1 Jan. 1691/2 - 26 Dec. 1723), daughter of Peter Beverley and Elizabeth Peyton, 22 June 1709. 
  Randolph was a member of the Colonial Council of State (1728-42),  an Henrico County clerk, and treasurer of the colony. He took the oath of militia colonel May 1740. 
  William died 19 October 1742, age 61, leaving a will in Goochland County naming four children and son-in-law John Chiswell (will dated 17 Oct. 1742,  recorded 16 Nov. 1742).

  "Here lyeth the Honourable William Randolph
  Esq., elsdest son of Col. William Randolph of this place and of Mary his wife who was of the Anceint and Emitnent Family of Northamptonshire, having been introduced early in Businesss, and passed through many of the inferiour offices of Government with great Reprutation and eminent Capactiy.
  He was at last By his Majesty's happy choice and the universal approbation of his Country advanced to the council. His experience in men and business the native graty and dignity of his person and behaviourhis attachment to the interest of his countryknowledge of the laws in general and of the laws and constituion of this Colony in particularhis integrity above all Calumny or suspicion , the acuteness of his parts, and the extensiveness of his geniuus together with the solidity of sense and judgement which was ever predominant in all he said or did- renedered him not only equal but an ornament to the high office he bore and had made him universally lamented as a most able and impartial judege and as an upright and unseful magistrate. In all other respects, neither was he lsess conspicuaious for a certain Majectic poainess of sense and honour, which carried him through all parts of private life witha an equal dignity and rpurtioan and desreedly obrained him the character of a just goo man in all the severall dutys and relations of life.
