  Virginia Prominent Families Vol 1-4
  2. Peter Randolph, b. at Turkey Island 1708, son of Councillor Randolph and Eliza, née Peyton, lived at Chatsworth. Married (1733) Lucy Bolling, daughter of Robert Bolling, and had four children, viz.: William, Beverly, Robert and Ann. Beverly was b. at Chatsworth 1734, and married Martha Cooke. He died at his residence "Green Creek," in Feb. 1797. He succeeded Edmond Randolph as Gov. of Virginia, Dec. 1, 1788, and served until Dec. 1, 1791. He was succeeded by Gen. "Light Horse" Harry Lee.

  [Henrico Dd Bk 1737-1750, pg 160] 3 June 1745. Peter Randolph of VarinaParish, Henrico Co, Esq. to MATTHEW HERBERT of same, planter. For 3,600 lbs tobacco. 404 acres in sd parish. Land was graned to Samuel Bridgeater20 Apr 1687 and by him sold to Richard Parker, and by him to William Soane,
  and by him to Allison Clark, and by him to Wm Randolph, Esq. and by him given to Peter Randolph by deed 4 Aug 1740. No witnesses. Recorded 3 June 1746.

  Randolph, the Hon Peter Esq., Surveyor Gen of H M"s Customs and a member of the council of this colony, died on 8 July at his seat at Chatsworth in Henrico Co.(VG 16 Jul, Pc 3 Aug 67); a dwelling house part of which was his property will be sold in Williamsburg by Carter Braxton and William Randolph(nfi) (VG 8 Oct 67); eaw his ex., Archibald Cary, Richard Randolph, John Wayles and Seth Ward(VG 18 May 69); his Pe in Halifax, Charlotte, Chesterfield, and Cumberland cos to be sold(Vg and Vgr 7 Sep 69); slaves bel to his estate to be sold at Manchester on 15 Apr by Archibald Cary and Richard Randolph(VGAA 22 Mar 83)

  Peter Randolph 
  of Chatsworth, Henrico county, and son of Hon. William Randolph of "Turkey Island," was born about 1713. His first public office seems to have been clerk of Albemarle county, which he held only during the year 1749, and then only by deputy. In 1751, he was a member of the house of burgesses for Henrico, and in the next year, was appointed to the council, of which he remained a member until his death. Some years after he became a councillor, he was appointed by the King, surveyor general of the customs for the middle district of America. Col. Randolph strongly opposed the measures taken by the more advanced friends of American liberty, and Jefferson relates how, on the morning after Henry's famous resolutions were adopted by the house of burgesses, he came to the capitol before the session of the house began, and saw Col. Peter Randolph, of the council, sitting at the clerk's desk and examining the journals to find a precedent for expunging a vote of the house.
