Her paternal grandparents were Madison Criswell Nickell and Mary Ann "Molly" Boyd; her maternal grandparents were Charles Morehead Holloway and Ida Francis Howard. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Madison Criswell, William Holloway, Hattie Irene, Grace Miller and Nellie Frances Nickell.
