Vance was born in March 1846.1 Vance's father was Roger Barton and his mother was Eudora Barry. His maternal grandparents were Daniel Barry and Rosanna Toland. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Hugh Grozier, Roger, Barton, Mary Ellen, Elizabeth, Rosa and Louise.-
