John Alexander was born on January 15th, 1820 in Maysville, KY.1 John Alexander's father was John Calhoun Andrews and his mother was Mary Ball Orr. His paternal grandparents were John Andrews and Eliza Calhoun; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Dalyrmple+ Orr and Mary Ball. He had a brother and four sisters, named Parker, Mary Eleanor, Eliza Jane, Susan Warfield and Martha. He was the oldest of the six children.-
