August was born on November 3rd, 1836 in Schwelm, Westfalen, Prussia.1   August's father was Friedrich Rosendahl and his mother was Maria Catherine Hobach. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Johann Friedrich, Carl, Wilhelm, Heinrich, Johanne and Auguste.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.1
