Godfrey "The Prisoner" was born in 0932 in Ardennes, France. Godfrey "The Prisoner"'s father was Gozelin of Bidgau and his mother was Uda of Metz. His paternal grandparents were Wigeric of Luxemburg and Cunegondis of France; his maternal grandparents were Gerhard of Metz and Uda of Saxony. He had three brothers named Adalbero, Henri and Reginar. He died after September 3rd, 1005 in Hatch Beauchamp, Taunton, Somerset, England. He was buried in Gent St Peter.General Notes
His parentage is proved by the charter dated 6 Apr 997 by which "Otto…Romanorum imperator augustus" confirmed the rights of "monasterio super fluvium Mose" founded by "Gotefridi comitis nostrique fidelis…et coniux sua pro anime sui fratris Alberonis"[44]. Graf im Bidgau 959. Comte de Verdun 963-985
"Uda…comitissa" donated property "in pago Rizzigowi cui Egylolfus comes" to St Maximin at Trier "pro remedio…seniorique mei Gozlini necnon filiorum meorum Henrici…et Reginheri, Godefridi quoque et Adalberonis" by charter dated 18 May 963 witnessed by "Sigefrido comite, Richwino comite"[211]. "Otto…Romanorum imperator augustus" confirmed the rights of "monasterio super fluvium Mose" founded by "Gotefridi comitis nostrique fidelis…et coniux sua pro anime sui fratris Alberonis" by charter dated 6 Apr 997[212]. Graf im Bidgau 959. Comte de Verdun 963-985. Richer records that "Belgicæ dux Theodericus, necnon et vir nobilis ac strenuous Godefridus, Sigefridus quoque vir illustris, Bardo etiam et Gozilo fratres clarissimi et nominatissimi" captured Verdun in 985[213]. He helped defend Verdun against Lothaire King of the West Franks in [984/85], but was captured together with Siegfried Comte de Luxembourg[214]. He remained imprisoned for more than 10 years. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records that "comes Raginerus" captured "Montem castri" from "comiti Godefrido" in 998[215] which, if the text refers to this Godefroi, suggests a later date of death (assuming the dating of Alberic is accurate).
