Albert I Mecklenburg was born in 1318 in Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany.  Albert I Mecklenburg's father was Henry II Mecklenburg and his mother was Anna Saxony Wittenberg.  His paternal grandparents were Heinrich I zu Mecklenburg and Anastasia Pomerania; his maternal grandparents were Albert II Saxony Wittenberg and Agnes Gertrude of Austria. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Johann I Mecklenburg, Anastasia Anna, Agnes and Beatrix.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Matilda.  He died in Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany.  He was buried in 1379 in Klosterkirche, Doberan, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany.
