Alan of was born in Galloway, Wigtownshire, Scotland.  Alan of's father was Roland MacDonald and his mother was Helena De Morville.  His paternal grandparents were Uchtred De Galloway and Gunhilda De Dunbar; his maternal grandparents were Richard de Morville and Avice or Avicia De Lancaster. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Devorguilla of and Ada.  He died in 1234 in Kirkcudbright, Scotland.  He was buried in Dundrennan Abbey, Galloway.
