His paternal grandparents were Bishop of Metz, Saint Arnoldus II and Dode(Clothilde) d'Heristal; his maternal grandfather is Pepin and his maternal grandmother was Iduberga(Itta). He had two brothers and a sister, named Pepin Martel, Haldan and Chlotilde. He is the second oldest of the four children.-
