Descends from the house of Du Vassal, Barons de Guerden, in Querci, Perigord
John Vassal was an alderman of London and in 1588 fitted out and commanded two ships of war, with which he joined the Royal Navy to oppose the Spanish Armada. He was a descendant of an ancient French family, traced back, it is claimed, to the eleventh century, of the house of Du Vassal, Barons de Guerden, in Querci, Perigord (Source: English Orgins of New England Families, 1st Series, Vol 3, pp 220-231.)
