William was born about 1433 in Dunbeath, Caithness, Scotland. William's father was William+ Sinclair and his mother was Elizabeth Douglas. His paternal grandparents were Henry+ Sinclair and Egidia Jill+ Douglas; his maternal grandparents were Archibald+ Douglas and Margaret+ Stewart.
