Alexander was born about 1520 in Pitsligo, Aberdeen, Scotland. Alexander's father was John Forbes and his mother is Jean Keith. His paternal grandfather was John Forbes and his paternal grandmother is Margaret Isobel Wemyss; his maternal grandparents were William+ Keith and Janet+ Dunbar. He was an only child.
