His paternal grandparents were John II J. Eastin and Nancy Ann Thorp. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Nicholas Harvey, Charles William, Margaret Ellen, Nancy June, Mary Ann, Martha Estel, Flora and Estie A.. He was the second oldest of the nine children.
