Gertrude was born in 1521 in Powderham, Devonshire, England. Gertrude's father was William Courtenay and her mother was Mary Gainsford. Her paternal grandfather was William Courtenay and her paternal grandmother is Cecily Cheney; her maternal grandfather was John Gainsford and her maternal grandmother is Anne Haute.
