Richard was born in 1649 in Henrico, VA. Richard's father was Richard+ Cocks and his mother was Mary Elizabeth+ Aston. His maternal grandparents were Walter III Aston and Hannah Jordan. He had four brothers and a sister, named John+, William, James, Edward and Elizabeth. He was the third youngest of the six children. He had three half-brothers named Maurice, Thomas and Richard.
