John Joseph was born on June 13th, 1821 in Piney Run, Carrol Co., MD. John Joseph's father was John Baumgardner and his mother was Margaret Kuntz. His paternal grandparents were Jacob+ Baumgardner and Mary Magdalene+ Kraft; his maternal grandparents were Paul+ Kuntz and Mary Ann+ X. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Francis J., William H., Mary Josephine, Elizabeth, Magdalena, Harriet A., Margaret Olivia and Agnes C.. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
