Thorstein, known as "the Red", was born about 0858 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. His paternal grandfather is King Ingjald ("the White") Helgasson; his maternal grandfather was Ketill ("Flatnefur", "Flatnose") Bjornsson and his maternal grandmother is Ingveld Ketilsdatter.
