Robert was born in 1170 in of Okehampton, Devonshire, England. Robert's father was Renaud (Reginald) Seigneur de Courtenay and his mother was Hawise de Curcy. His paternal grandparents were Renaud (Reginald) Seigneur de Courtenay and Hawise de Donjon; his maternal grandparents are William de Curcy and Maud de Avranches. He had two brothers and a sister, named Reginald, Henry and Egelina. He was the second oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 72 on August 2nd, 1242 in Iwerne, Dorset, England.
