Reginald was born about 1174 in of Okehampton, Devonshire, England. Reginald's father was Renaud (Reginald) Seigneur de Courtenay and his mother was Hawise de Curcy. His paternal grandparents were Renaud (Reginald) Seigneur de Courtenay and Hawise de Donjon; his maternal grandparents are William de Curcy and Maud de Avranches.
