2nd husband of Esilia de Crispin. [Falaise Roll, p. 43]
The potent lord Alured (Auvrai) de Lincoln witnessed a charter in Normandy in
1080 and was a great Domesday baron who attended Duke William on his expedition
to England in 1066. He held in chief in Bedfordshire and North Riding,
Lincolnshire, in which latter county he possessed 50 lordships, and was an
undertenant in Rutland and Cheshire. He probably m. Esilia, dau. of Gilbert
Crispin I, widow of William Malet I, who contracted a second marriage after the
death of her husband. [Falaise Roll, p. 156]
Alured occurs in Domesday as the grandson or nephew of Thorold the sheriff in
the time previous to Domesday concerning land of the Saxon Sybi in the city of
Lincoln, which he held direct from the king. Alured held Thorold's lands of the
fief of Colsuan of Lincoln, a favourite of King William, as his homager.
[Falaise Roll, p. 157]
Alured had another son, Alured II, whose son Robert held the castle of Wareham
against King Stephen for the Empress Matilda in 1138, as recorded by Orderic
Vital, and who occurs in the same Pipe roll as Alan II in the county
of Dorset. [Falaise Roll, p. 158]
That Alured de Lincoln was only partly of Anglo-Saxon extraction is attested by
the fact that he was not written among the tenants of Edward the Confessor,
neither does he appear as one before the compilation of Domesday, from which it
can be taken for granted that he was a foreigner. The Grand Charter of the
abbey of Bec where one might reasonably look for him if Norman reveals only
Alured, bro. of Warren de Manmulin, whose name immediately precedes that of
Gilbert Crispin II. This is the company in which Alured de Lincoln would be
expected to be found, nevertheless there is no evidence whatever that it was
him. His name and that of Alan imply a Breton origin, which is probably
correct, although it has not been proven. He is known only as Lincoln taken
from his English barony, and he must have been of distinguished lineage which
his honours and possessions indicate. [Falaise Roll, p. 159]
Succeeded Alan Lincoln I bet. 1081-86 when he d.s.p. Alured I by a marriage
with Esilia Crispin Malet had Alan II, his heir, and Alured II. [Falaise Roll,
p. 159]
