His paternal grandfather was Count Luitfride II Count of Upper Alsace and his paternal grandmother is Countess of Upper Alsace Hiltrude; his maternal grandparents were Duke of Hesbaye Ingeramne, Duke of Hesbaye and Judith of Bavaria. He had a brother and four sisters, named Luitfried III Count of Upper, Bertha of, Ermengarde of, , Holy Roman Empress Queen of Italy and Adelaide of. He was the oldest of the six children.
