Called "Huitbein" (white leg), King of the Uplanders of Sweden, King of
Salver and Vestfold; conquered Roumarike; founded the pagan temple at
Skiringssal,8th century. [Roderick W. Stuart, Royalty for Commoners, 3rd
ed., Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore MD, 1998]. NOTE: Unlike
many other sources Ihave used, Moncreiffe, I. 1982 (chart 35, p. 109)
adds two generations between Halfdan Olafsson and Gudrod Halfdansson:
Halfdan "the Stingy," King of Vestfold, as father of Gudrod (Guthroth),
whom he calls "Godfrey the Proud;" whose father was Eystein "the Fart,"
King of Roumarike. Though the work carriesno bibliography, Moncreiffe
was an outstanding authority, and pending proof otherwise, may well be
considered correct. Moncreiffe is in agreement with Sturluson, S. 1991
(pp. 47-48) but Sturluson is not highly regarded by many authorities.
[Roderick W. Stuart, Royalty for Commoners, 3rd ed., Genealogical
Publishing Company, Baltimore MD, 1998].
After a season of bad harvests, the woodcutting king [Olof Ingjaldsson]
was sacrificed to Odin so that his peoplemight have good crops. He was
succeeded by his son Halfdan Whiteleg, who is said to have extended his
rule over much of southern Norway. Halfdan died at aripe old age, was
dully placed in a burial mound, and his deeds were sun bythe bards.
[Royal Families of Medieval Scandinavia, Flander & Kiev]
Halfdan founded the pagan temple at Skiringssal in the 8th century. His
nickname was "Huitein" which meant "white leg."
