CHARLES GALLOWAY. In the veins of the gentleman whose name heads thissketch flows sterling Scotch blood, for his paternal grandfather, JAMESGALLOWAY, was born in the land of "thistles and oatmeal," of Scotchparents. He immigrated to this country from the land of his birth inearly manhood and later settled in the district known as the old CrabOrchard, Ky. He was the founder of the family in this country, andeventually passed from life in Knox County, Tenn. He was one of thepioneers of that State, was active in its development, and took part in anumber of engagements with the Indians, when his home and that of hisneighbors was threatened. Politically he is a Democrat. He reared afamily of four sons and five daughters, JESSE GALLOWAY, the father of thesubject of this sketch, being one of the former and a native of the "darkand bloody ground." He was taken to Tennessee when quite small, and afterresiding there until about sixty years of age he removed to Indiana, andin 1839 became a resident of Barry County, Mo., of which place he was aresident until his death ten years later. Like his father before him hewas a Democrat, and also like him he was active in assisting in thesettlement of his section, which at that time was in a very wild state, inhabited by plenty of wild game of various kinds. He took part in theCreek, Seminole and Cherokee Indian Wars, and was also a participant inthe War of 1812. He was married in Tennessee to Miss WILLIAMS, who borehim three children: Dilla, Louie and Sallie, and after the death of hisfirst wife he again married in Tennessee, his second wife bearing himeight children: Mariah, Peggie, Elizabeth, Charles (the subject of thissketch), Alexander, Caroline, Mary and one who died in infancy. Themother died in Morgan County, Ind., in 1836, her birth having occurred inTennessee, she being a member of a prominent old family of that State bythe name of CALDWELL. The father's third marriage was to a Mrs. COONS,who bore him three children: Melville, Anna and Francis. The last wife isstill living, though advanced in years, in Berry [sic] County, Mo.--extract from A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region (Goodspeed,1894), 774.
