Roger II de was born in 1205 in of Clifford Castle,Herefordshire,England. Roger II de's father was Roger, Lord de Clifford and his mother was Sibella de Ewyas. His maternal grandparents were Robert II de Ewyas Lord and Petronilla Scudamore. He had a brother and a sister, named Hugh and de. He was the oldest of the three children. Robert - A border baron from the southern marches of Wales, who came out on the right side in the Barons' War, was allowed by the King to marry his son to the elder Vipont heiress, Isabella, with whom went the western part of the de Vipont lands, including Appleby and Brougham. The young man died in the Welsh wars, to be succeeded by Robert, the first of the northern Cliffords. [Brough Castle, p. 16]

Roger - d.c. 1285. Roger succeeded to the lordship of Tenbury as a minor (c. 1231). He went with Henry III to France (1259); sided with Simon de Montfort against the king in 1262-4, but fought for Henry at Lewes (1264) and Evesham (1265). He accompanied Prince Edward (later Edward I) on crusade from 1270-74 and was made envoy to France by him in 1275. Appointed justice for Wales in 1279, he was captured and temporarily imprisoned by Welsh rebels at his castle at Hawarden in 1282. [The Plantagenet Encyclopedia, p. 52]
Roger, became the guardian, and later father-in-law of Isabella de Viteripont, when his son, Roger married her in 1269. [The Diaries of Lady Anne Clifford, p. 5]

In 1282 John Tregoz acknowledged by fine that the manor of Drayton was the right of Geoffrey de Picheford and Alice his wife and their issue. The same year Tregoz gave the manor of Drayton, par. of Oving, Sussex, to Queen Eleanor, who gave it to Geoffrey de Picheford, knight of her household, and Alice his wife; Sir Roger de Clifford, the elder, who held it for life, released his interest to Queen Eleanor; for which grant Geoffrey gave to the queen in exchange certain lands in Ashford and Sheldon, Derbyshire.
