Son of Earl Ralph, earl of Hereford; "of tender years" on the death of his father, thus Herefordshire was added to Harold Godwinson's West Saxon earldom. His name is still preserved in that of Ewyas Harold, but it was impossible to entrust the care of a Welsh border district to a child. [The Victoria History of the Counties of England: A History of Herefordshire, p. 354]
Sudeley estate was famous for the quality of its oaks and the deer which grazed its woods and royal parklands. The original house was probably situated in the field now known as the Hop Yard to the east of the Queen's Garden.
The de Sudeley family survived the Norman Conquest without losing their lands, unlike many contemporaries, whose estates William I greedily confiscated. They flourished at Sudeley for three centuries, distinguishing themselves in the Crusades and other campaigns. The family moved in Royal circles, and several generations held important Court positions. [Sudeley Castle & Gardens]
