In court records 22 Apr 1800 John is identified as aged 44
, brother to Adam Bratton.
According to statements in the files of Augusta Co. chancer
y suit N.S. 187, Craig vs. Bratton, John Bratton, brother o
f Adam and one of the executors, left Virginia shortly afte
r 1809, and died in Kentucky. Needs furtherresearch in Vir
ginia and Kentucky records.
Moved to Kentucky about 1789, there are stories that he wa
s running around with Daniel Boone.
Several sources state that as a Captain of the Augusta Co
. militia he foughtat the battle of Guilford Court House i
n North Carolina on 15 Aug 1781 and was seriously injured
. I have not verified this. Church records for the Bath Co
unty settlers will be found at Windy Cove Presbyterian Chur
ch.
His inventory included usual household furniture and farm e
quipment, livestock, tanner's equipment, leather and leathe
r-working tools, and a variety of books. There was also sp
inning and weaving equipment which was probably used by wif
e,Rebecca.
His estate sale was reported on 07 Dec 1830 by William an
d Andrew Bratton, executors, and Charles L. Francisco, Comm
r. Among the purchasers were: Robert Stuart, Joseph Burge
r, John Dunlap, William Crawford, Robert Bratton, Rebecca M
cClung, John B. Crawford, Adam and John Porter, Andrew Craw
ford, Robert McClung, Andrew Sitlington, John Gay, Robert S
itlington, William and James Youel, Joshua McDannald, Jame
s Berry, Joseph and Thomas Gwin, RobertDunlap, Robert Grah
am, David Berry, and Elizabeth Lockridge.
In the WPA Historical Inventory, the original Bratton hom
e is listed as belonging to "Jimmy"Bratton in 1791, deede
d (or devised) by him to Andrew Bratton in 1828, who deede
d it to Andrew S. Bratton in 1868. It is described as a bri
ck home with9 rooms and 3 rooms in the basement. Built i
n old colonial style, constructed of stone and brick. Th
e second house, constructed about 1810, is shown aspropert
y of James Bratton, deeded (or devised) to John Bratton i
n 1826, to Andrew Bratton in 1839, and to James Bratton i
n 1869. It was still owned by Bratton heirs in 1937. Phot
ographs of these homes will be included when available.
The cemetery is 4 mi. east of Millboro Springs, VA, on Rt
. 42 on the right side of the road traveling east. Stone r
eads "Sacred to the memory of James Bratton who departed th
is life on the 29th day of June 1828 in the 82nd year of hi
s life."
In his will he mentions wife, Rebecca, sons William, John
, Andrew, Lewis, Robert and David, and daughters Margret (m
. Crawford),Rebecca (m. McClung), and Agnes (deceased, m
. Porter).
