Dunmore' War was a conflict between the Colony of Virgini
aand the Native Americans of the Ohio Valley. Following in
creased raids and attacks on frontiersmen in this region, t
he Royal Governor of Virginia, Lord Dunmore, organized a la
rge force of militia and marched to Fort Pitt arrivingat t
he end of August 1774. Dunmore also ordered Colonel Andre
w Lewis, commander of the southwestern Virginia militia, t
o raise an army in the south andmeet Dunmore's force alon
g the Ohio River. Lewis formed militia companies from Augus
ta, Bedford, Botetourt, Culpeper, Dunmore, Fincastle, and K
entucky counties. After Colonel Lewis' victory at the Battl
e of Point Pleasant, Dunmore successfully negotiated a peac
e treaty with the Delaware, Mingo, and Shawnee chiefs tha
t prevented them from settling or hunting south of the Ohi
o River.
