He came from Holland in the "Salt Mountain" to New Amsterdam in 1633
*13 MAR 1646/47 Purchased land south of Fort Amsterdam between Jan Snedeker and Joris Rapalje's. *30 MAR 1647 Acquired by grant 400 acres at the head of Newton Creek, called Cripple Bush.  Hans Hansen Bergen was from Bergen, Norway, though his family originally hailed from Sweden. He was a ship carpenter by trade and worked between Norway and Holland. From Holland he emigrated in 1633 to New Amsterdam,arriving at Fort Amsterdam about April on the West India Company's ship "Salt Mountain". He resided in Brooklyn where he had land holdings which included a tobacco plantation.   An entire book has been written about him; Descendants of Hans Hartsen Bergen, One of the Early Settlers of New York, With Notes on other Long Island Families (New York 1866). He was the common ancestor of the Bergen family of Long Island and New Jersey   He was accused of smuggling in 1646 but pardoned as a result of being found "for fourteen years a respectable resident in New Amsterdam."   Hans Hansen never learned to write.
