Daniel Webster Tatum and Fannie Stanford were married Jan. 21, 1880. H
is M other, Rachel Potts was a Cherokee Indian. He came to Texas with a br
othe r, Robert (Bob) Tatum. Bob Tatum Married Emma Stanford, sister of Fan
ni e. The Tatum brothers had a sister ,Mollie and a half or step broth
er D ow Moss. Daniel and Fannie lived in Farmersville, Tulip, Red River Co
un ty and Delta County. He was a farmer, he worked on the railroad, w
as a car penter, brick mason, and hunter-trapper. His children remember
ed that he h elped build the Hopkins County Courthouse in Sulphur Spring
s. Fannie Stanf ord died 1903, following the birth of Myrtle Tatum and w
as buried in Daws on Cemetery in Delta County. That summer Daniel marri
ed Mary Nance Beal e. Homer and Lewis Tatum were so young they never remem
bered their Moth er and considered Mary to be their real Mother.
They bought a farm at Giles where they farmed and lived until their de
at h. Lewis and Ethyl Tatum lived with them. Their son Charles remembe
rs , pr obably more than anyone else, a lot about Grandpa Tatum. Grandpa s
mok ed a pipe and taught Charles to smoke when he was a small chil
d. It w as a corncob pipe. As they sat on the front porch listening to t
he boxi ng matches on the radio , Grandpa said to Charles, " Son, somed
ay you' ll be seeing these as well as hearing them! "His children rememb
er h im as a great big man standing well over 6 feet tall. He spoke with a
uthor ity on many subjects. According to those who remember him proud
ly he w as a master of many trades.
During 1989 The Corp of Engineers moved Dawson Cemetery to a new locat
io n, due to the development of the Cooper Dam and Reservoir. Fannie Stan
fo rd Tatum's remains were removed to Giles from Dawson and placed along
si de Daniel W. Tatum. This was written by Zelda Nance Fisher, Grand daug
