John, Sr. was born on July 1st, 1860 in Hugo, Indian Territory, Oklahoma.1 John, Sr.'s father was William M. Spring and his mother was Jane LeFlore. His paternal grandparents were Christopher Columbus Spring and Susan Bohanon; his maternal grandparents are Issac Leflore and Patsey LeFleau. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Francis, William 'Willie', Basil, Gibson, Mary, Unknown, Jane, Annie, Patsy Martha and Susan.
