His paternal grandparents were Travis Roberts and Mary Ann Birtrong. He had two brothers and eight sisters, named William Travis, Monroe Franklin, Mary, Tenneesse (Teny), Rosa Monroe, Vergie, Etta, Silvey Jane, Effie and Viola. He is the fourth youngest of the eleven children.-
