His paternal grandparents were Gideon Graham and Elizabeth Minnix. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Samuel Alexander, Gideon, Ernest Abner, Elizabeth, Millie E., Melvina J. and Stella F.. He was the third youngest of the eight children.
