Per e-mail from Michele, JCBrooks@@aol.com. In her research John al
so we nt by the name of John Graham Colins. His marriage to Tabitha C
ox in 18 80 was in Uvalde Co., Texas. He was a stock herder. Collins w
as an assum ed name. John had had some kind of trouble in Texas and that w
as the reas on he was going under Collins.

John Graham alias Collins, a young Cowboy who worked at cow raching in L
in coln County, visited the Cox famiy's camp and made the acquaintan
ce of Tab itha. He was a dashing cowboy endowed with good looks, and so
on a courtsh ip sprang up between them. On one occasion he visited the ca
mp bring the K id and another man with him.  It was near the noon hour a
nd they were invi ted to eat dinner. This was no to Henry Cox's likingin
g, but was the cust om of all the ranchers in this section of the country.
Collins knew Sheriff Pat Garrett and his deputy John Poe, having m
et th em in White Oaks several times. Collins and was Fort Sumner when P
oe ca me in from Garrett's posse to try and find out where The Kid was sta
yin g. Feeling that the Kid sould be warned, Collins saddled his cowpony a
nd s tarted out in Pete Maxwell's sheep camp. When he had reached a poi
nt abo ut two miles form cap, he met the Kid, who said he was going to Max
well 's to get a fresh hourse before heading for Mexico. Collins told t
he Kid t hat Poe was in Fort Sumner looking for him. The Kid only laugh
ed and ro de on. Collins was surprised that the Kid did not ;heed his warn
ing. the n ext morning, when Collins returned to Fort Sumner, he was to
ld that Garre tt had killed the Kid. He could't feature the Kid riding in
to a trap aft er he had warned him that Poe  was in town to either captu
re or kill him .. (Billy the Kid)
Researh done in Lincoln Co., New Mexico records mentions a Colli
ns in a wa rrant for horse or cow stealing.
Family tradition says that John met Billy as he headed in to Maxwell
's a nd warned him that Garrett and Poe were in tojwn looking for him. Bil
ly an swered, "Yeah, I know all about that" and rode on.
Collins was a ssumed name. But he finally changed it back to Graham.
