Let me speak of the death of my mother, Elizabeth Basham, who fell vict
im to Diphtheria, on the 17th of June. She was born in Western Virgin
ia in 1797, and reared in East Tennessee, by the paternal
care of Samson Davis, her father, to the age of 18, when she was marri
ed to James D. Basham, of Breckenridge Co. Ky, in which Co she continued t
ill October 1833. They then, with their family of four
children, immigrated to Sullivan Co., Ind., where, in 1834, under the min
istry of that accomplished workman, M. R. Trimble, she learned the tru
th as it is in Jesus, and entered upon a Christian
warfare of 30 years' duration, and by her pious and godly example, won h
er reckless husband to the gospel of Christ; and every child of the ni
ne of which she was mother, and several grandchildren,
she influenced to a great extent to come to Christ, which they did duri
ng her stay on earth. But she is gone! yet her bright example lives, a
nd is before our mind's eye by day and in our dreams by
night, telling us to be followers of that which is good. She has fallen i
nto that sleep which can only be broken up by the voice of the archangel a
nd the trumpet of God, then to be raised with those
that shall rise first, even with those who sleep in Jesus. Written by Sam
uel Wesley Basham in the Sept 1863 edition of "The Millennial Harbinger
