His paternal grandparents are James Beatty and Jane McElroy; his maternal grandparents were Ralph Whitsett Means and Lydia Jones. He had two brothers and a sister, named Lewis Means, William James and Lydia Florence. He was the youngest of the four children. He died at the age of 61 on July 15th, 1961 in Allegheny General Hospital, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. He was buried on July 18th, 1961 in McKeesport Versailles Cem.
