Solomon Basham came to Texas in the 1880's from Fort Smith, Arkan
sa s. He settled close to the Cow House Creek near what is not Gatesvill
e, Te xas. Solomon was mainly of English descent but also had some Cherok
ee bloo d. Solomon and his wife raised seven sons and three daughters. Ea
ch of t he sons in his turn was sent to the University of Texas where he r
eceiv ed a teaching certificate. One of the sons, Henry, settled in Park
er Coun ty about 1900 on the Brazos River near the current town of Denni
s, Texa s. Henry and his wife, Ann, raised five children. During Henry's l
ife he n ot only taught school and played the violin, but, he also serv
ed as a Tex as Ranger for more than 25 years.
It has been said that he had been shot 13 times while in the servi
ce of t he state. One of Henry's sons, Sol, and his wife, Elizabeth farm
ed and rai sed livestock. Sol was industrious and did whatever extra wo
rk was necessa ry to support his family. During the depression he made syr
up from ribb on cane in order to augment his livelihood. Sol lost his wi
fe early in lif e, but they did have two sons: Buck S.A. and Henry (nam
ed for his grandfat her) were quite young when their mother died. Hen
ry at this time receiv ed the nickname of "Bill". Sol later married Lill
ie Solbee. Together th ey raised the children and worked hard at farmin
