Accorcing to the Cab ell County, Virginia 1850 census William Claudis Smith was born in Pennsylvania County and was married to Sarah Hatfield.
William Claudis Smith a pioneer miller erected the Smith's mill in 1825 or 1826 at Ranger, Laurel Hill District,V irginia. The first Grist Mill in this part of the Guyandotte Valley grinding 20 bushels of corn per day, he was also a farmer , trapper, hunter and timberman. William Claudis Smith and his brother-in-law James Hatfield owned most of present Ranger and surrounding lands of the Guyan River. Sarah's father Isaac Hatfield born 1783 in Louden County, Virginia. Son of Captian Andrew and Christine Hatfield. Issac was a hunter, timberman and soldier in the War of 1812 withJohn Lucas. Joining at the age of 16 years, Montgomery County Milita. Issac came with the McComas brothers who settled near what is now Midkiff and Nile Mile. Issac married a second time to Susan Brumfield.
The Cabell and Lincoln County Hatfield's trace their lineage to Thomas Hatfield born 1600 in Yorkshire, England. There were two sons living in America in 1665, one in Conn. and one in Elizabeth Town, N.J. Their children Issac 1165-1710 and Cornelilus who married Abigail and Abraham, Sr. 1670 -1706 Who married Phoebe Ogden. Abraham Jr. was the great great grand parents of Anderson "devil Anse" Hatfield.
Issac Hatfield married Mary French daughter of Matthew and Sarah [Payne] French in Montfomery County , Virginia in 1788 and settled on 50 acres of the Guyandotte River Bottom land at Ranger's Branch. Their youngest child Sarah Married William Claudis Smith 4 April 1812.
‌William Claudis and Sarah Anna were married in a religious ceremony on April 4th, 1812 in Ragner, Cabell County, Virginia.2 They had six sons and three daughters, named Ballard, Harvey, James, Isaac, Richard S, David French, Elizabeth, Elender and Cynthia Ann.

Richard S was born in 1823 in Ranger, Cabell Co, Virginia.1 He died at the age of 39 on April 17th, 1862 in Shiloh, Tennessee. He was buried in 1866 in Shiloh National Cemetery, Tennessee.2 2
David French Smith
David French was born on June 12th, 1833 in Ranger, Cabell Co, Virginia.2 He died at the age of 85 on May 15th, 1919 in Ranger, Lincoln Co, West Virginia. He was buried in Smith Cemetery, Cabell Co, Virginia..2
