Alexander was born on October 18th, 1856 in Mercer Co., Virginia.1 Alexander's father was William Russell Hager and his mother was Sarah Stump. His paternal grandparents were Alexander Allen Hager and Elizabeth Bailey. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William H., James McHenry, Archibald Bailey, Mary S. V. and Sarieda A.. He is the third youngest of the six children.-
