His paternal grandparents were James Bailey and Margaret Stinson. He has five brothers and three sisters, named John A., Zachariah, Patrick, Herman, William R. P., Martha R., Luvenia L. and Mary M.. He is the third youngest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Eli.-
