John was born in 1712.  John's father is Francis Thornton and his mother was Mary Taliaferro.  His maternal grandfather was John Taliaferro and his maternal grandmother is Sarah Smith. He has four brothers and four sisters, named Francis, Reuben, William, William, Alice, Mary, Elizabeth Mary and Mildred.
