Joseph Wallace was born on October 11th, 1832 in Kersley, Lancaster, , England. Joseph Wallace's father was James TAYLOR and his mother was Alice WALKER. His paternal grandparents are James TAYLOR and Ann WALKER; his maternal grandparents are James WALKER and Betty HUCHINSON. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Joseph Walker, Peter Walker, Peter, Betty, Sarah Ann and Martha Jane. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
