His paternal grandparents were Philip SLOCOMB and Charity BICKHAM; his maternal grandparents were Christopher Jr. COOK and Elizabeth COOK. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named John, Ebenezer, Nathaniel, John, Peleg, Samuel, Eliezer, Johanna and Mary. He was the third oldest of the ten children.
