His paternal grandparents are Stephen REED and Ann LUTHER; his maternal grandparents are Stephen BOWEN and Phoebe SLADE. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Jonathan, Samuel, Asa, Stephen, Anne, Phebe and Lillis. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
