Shelah was born on March 23rd, 1856. Shelah's father is James Thompson PATTON and his mother was Mary PHILLIPS. His maternal grandfather was William PHILLIPS and his maternal grandmother is Nancy WATERS. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph Wilson, William Buell, Hiram C, Nancy, Anna, Margaret, Mary, Eliza Caroline Odgen, Katherine and Julia Agnes.-
