Penelope was born on February 4th, 1778 in <, Rowan, Nc>. Penelope's father was Benjamin MERRILL JR and her mother was Jemima SMITH. Her paternal grandparents were William MERRILL JR and Penelope (Jewell) (Merrill)(Heria) STOUT; her maternal grandparents were Andrew Jr. SMITH and Ann (Anna) MERSHON. She had seven brothers and seven sisters, named Samuel, John, William, Andrew, Charles, Elijah, Jonathan, Nancy, Anna, Penelope, Anna, Nancy, Ellen and Ellien.
